Drone strikes in Saudi Arabia
Stuff Reporter: Yemen's Houthi rebels have launched missile and drone strikes on several energy and water treatment plants in southern Saudi Arabia, the country's administration has claimed.
The Iranian-backed Yemeni rebel group's attack temporarily halted energy and water purification, but caused no casualties.
The attack took place on Sunday (March 20th) in the southern province of Jizan, according to a statement from the Saudi Ministry of Energy.
It said a natural gas plant, a petroleum distribution terminal in the southern province of Jizan, and the Yasref refinery at the port of Yanbu, on the shores of the Red Sea, had been hit by missiles and drones.
The attack temporarily reduced production at the Yasref refinery.
However, Yanbu Aramco, a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and China Petrochemical Corporation, will increase production from Sinopec Refining Company, the statement said.
Aramco CEO Amin Nasser said the attack would have no effect on customer supply.
The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen says a power station at the Al Shaqeeq water treatment plant in the Dhahran al-Janub area and a gas plant in the Khamis Mushait area were also targeted on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
The statement said several missiles and drones fired by the Houthis were destroyed after being intercepted.
The attack damaged the installations but caused no casualties.
